After a fire alarm Wednesday morning, the MacDonald Senior’s Residence on Bertha Street in Vankleek Hill was evacuated and residents were taken to the Vankleek Hill Community Centre, about a couple blocks away on Mill Street. It was discovered that a heat detector had set off the alarm. Residents were able to return to their home after about an hour and a half later when fire fighters had declared the building as safe.
Grenville village council has purchased 424 rue Principale, which was better known as the home of the Le Cabaret strip bar. The bar had closed this past spring and council concluded the deal to purchase the building in September for $350,000. The village Director-General said council’s decision to purchase the building was unanimous ans was with the aim to revitalize Grenville’s main street and to deal with some of the social and criminal problems sometimes associated with strip bars.
Canada Post employees will continue rotating walkouts this morning in three cities — Sherbrooke, Quebec; Calgary, and Kelowna, B-C. But the strike has ended in the Greater Toronto Area, where two days of work stoppage forced the closure of the Crown corporation’s biggest sorting plants, delaying shipments of tens of thousands of letters and parcels nationwide. The Canadian Union of Postal Workers announced early today that Sherbrooke workers were hitting the picket line, to join Calgary workers who walked out last night, and Kelowna workers who set up pickets early yesterday.
Breaking the rules for Canada’s recent legalization of recreational cannabis can get newcomers deported. The federal government is warning permanent and temporary residents that stiffer rules for impaired driving that will take effect in December will fall under the definition of serious crimes for immigration-determination purposes. Ottawa is also warning everyone that the Cannabis Act includes penalties of up to 14 years in prison for illegal production or distribution of cannabis, for taking it across the border, and for giving or selling pot to someone under 18.
