The Earth Can’t Keep Up With Us

This year, today — August 1st — marks the estimated day that humans have used up a year’s worth of resources.

The estimated date of when we’ve used more from nature than our planet can give back comes a day earlier than last year.

The Global Footprint Network calls it “Earth Overshoot Day.” It means that as a species, we are currently using up nature’s
resources around 1.7 times faster than the planet’s ecosystems can regenerate them.

When taken on an individual country level, Canada’s overshoot day was March 18th.

Only four countries have even sooner overshoot days, including the U-S at March 15th. (2)
