Physicians did not know at first what had caused his symptoms as the man had no neurological deficits such as slurred speech, muscle weakness or vision loss that would have indicated a stroke. CT imaging had also ruled out any blood clots or bleeding in the large blood vessels supplying the brain.
The doctors were finally able to diagnose the man with a reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome, otherwise known as RCVS.
RCVS is characterized by an intense “thunderclap headache” which is due to constriction of blood vessels in the brain and is known to cool off within a few days.
