Social Services Minister Lisa MacLeod says the P-C government’s proposed welfare reforms will help restore dignity to Ontarians. She says the government will come up with a plan within 100 days to overhaul what she described as the “disjointed patchwork system” that was left by the previous Liberal government. The first step will be to cancel the Liberals’ plan to raise Ontario Disability Support Program and Ontario Works rates by three per cent and raise them by 1.5 per cent instead. The Tory government will also wind down Ontario’s basic income pilot project, which provided payments to four-thousand low-income people in communities including Hamilton, Brantford, Thunder Bay and Lindsay.
A man who died in a plane crash near North Bay has been identified as 57-year-old Michael MacNeil of Ottawa. Provincial police say MacNeil died Monday after the Ultralight plane went down in the bush about 100 metres from Talon Lake, in Bonfield Township. They say a fire broke out at the crash site and about two dozen local cottagers used buckets and coolers of water to douse the flames. The Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash.
As a forest fire burns in northeastern Ontario, many residents in cottage country have either left their homes or are bracing for an evacuation order that could come at any moment. Ontario’s Ministry of Natural Resources says the fire known as Parry Sound 33 has now burned more than 100 square kilometres. Ministry officials say the fire is now only five kilometres from the Trans-Canada Highway. The municipality of French River has issued an evacuation alert, warning residents in some areas that they should be prepared to leave at a moment’s notice.
