In The News For July 10, 2018

At Champlain Township council’s most recent meeting  a culvert replacement on the south side of the 417 overpass near Herb’s Travel Plaza was up for discussion. Of the two options presented to Champlain Township by the public works, complete closure of Highway 34 for 57 hours seems to be the choice of contractor R. W. Tomlinson Ltd. The other option was to install a temporary modular bridge to facilitate the culvert replacement over a period of time. The closure will not happen before Labour Day weekend according  the Public Works report contained in the council agenda package.

 

 

Details are expected to be announced this morning about plans by Amazon to open a massive distribution centre in Orleans. Media reported in May that the online retailer will be the tenant of a giant new facility at Boundary Road and the 417. Neither Amazon nor the city would confirm the plans at that time, but Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson and Cumberland ward councillor Stephen Blais  are  scheduled to make an announcement about Amazon’s plans today. The distribution centre is expected to create about one-thousand jobs.

 

 

An education advocacy group says a move by the new Ontario government will hurt schools and students across the province. Stephen Seaborn of the Campaign for Public Education says school budgets were never considered before the Tory government cancelled a 100-million-dollar fund for school repairs. The cut is a result of Premier Doug Ford’s campaign promise toscrap the province’s cap-and-trade system.

 

 

Officials in Quebec now suspect as many as 70 people may have died in connection with last week’s heat wave, which saw temperatures top 40-Celsius when the oppressive humidity was factored in. Most of the heat-related deaths occurred in Montreal, with 34 cases reported to authorities.
