In The News For July 9, 2018

Crews are working to replenish oxygen tanks leading to a flooded cave in northern Thailand, where eight young soccer players and their coach are waiting for their turn to be rescued. A team of 18 divers have already managed to bring out four boys, who are undergoing detailed medical checks after spending more than two weeks in the cave. The same team will bring out the remaining nine, because they are now familiar with the cave conditions and how to navigate the narrow, twisting passageways filled with fast-moving muddy water.

 

As Quebec deals with about 60 active forest fires, more than 200 firefighters from across Canada and the northeastern U-S are coming to help support crews. The reinforcements from Saskatchewan, Alberta, Massachusetts and Parks Canada join the service’s 400 firefighters as well as colleagues loaned out from New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, New Hampshire and Maine. A spokeswoman for the fire protection service says there have been 357 fires in the province so far this year, up from an average
of 276.

 

Local craft brewery Beau’s had their 5k for Ovarian Cancer Saturday, raising $60,000. The run is inspired by Vankleek Hill local and running enthusiast Ashley Cowan, and her own diagnosis and journey with ovarian cancer. This year in Canada alone, 2,800 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer and half will not survive past five years.

 

The Town of Hawkesbury, Valoris CTC and Groupe Action Hawkesbury family Centre are gearing up for the  families Field Day For Kids this coming Friday from 10  to 2  at Old Mill Park. Activities include inflatable games, tug-of-war, water games by the Hawkesbury fire department, face painting and giant games. A BBQ Lunch will be served to children who have filled out their activities passport. In case of rain, the event will take place at the Robert Hartley Sports Complex.
